4 Cardinals make the All-YVC Team!

Congratulations to Jaiden Thompson, Ranon Suttle Paisley Boatright and Ezra Martin for being named All-YVC for the 2022-23 season. Martin was the lone Cardinal to be named to the boys All-YVC team. Thompson along with Suttle are freshman and Boatright is a sophomore were name to teh girls All-YVC for the 2022-23 season. Congrats to all four Cardinals!

Yellow Jackets Byrams nets his 1000 point!

Congratulations to Forest Hills senior guard Jakaree Byrams. Byrams joined the 1000-point club and led the Yellow Jackets to a 73-62 win over Anson Co. in the 1st round of the Rocky River conference tournament. Byrams entered the game with 995 career points and scored his 1000th point on a three from the corner to put us up 15-8 over Anson County. Jakaree finished the game with 27points along with 12 rebounds. Byrams joins former Yellow Jacket greats Nas Tyson (2169 pts), Jai Rorie (1563 pts), Terrence Huntley (1184 pts), Jordan Blakeney (1000 pts) and Zaccheaus Rorie (1000 pts) in the exclusive club. Harris sets another Porter Ridge school record!

Porter Ridge senior guard Kyler Harris is now Porter Ridge’s single season leader in points scored in a season after a 26-point game against rival Piedmont. Harris entered his final regular season game with 597 points this season. The Pirate record was 608 points in a season held by former Pirate great DJ Harrison in the 2006-07 season. Earlier this season Harris broke Harrison’s record for points in a game with 44. Harris’s 623 points ranks him 7th all time in Union Co. history and with at least one game left he will move up the points ladder. Harris now has 1044 career points and has his eye on the Pirate record for career points held by former teammate Isaiah Williams with 1062 points. Congrats Kyler!!

Douglas sets Marvin Ridge school record!

Marvin Ridge senior forward Zahra Douglas is now Marvin Ridge’s all-time leading scorer after a 15-point game against rival Weddington. Douglas entered the game needing 7 points to break Maverick great Jordan Henry’s record of 1021 career points. Earlier this season Douglas became the 2nd Maverick ever to score 1000 points in a career. Congrats Zahra!!

Cavs Iovino now 2nd in career 3's!

Cuthbertson senior “sniper” Reagan Iovino is now 2nd best 3-point shooter in Union Co. history. Reagan moved pass Sun Valley “sniper” Karli Mason (207) earlier this season to move into 2nd in Union Co. history for 3-pointers made in a career. Despite missing a full calendar year with a knee injury Iovino still has been able to knock down 221 3’s in her four years as a Cavalier. Weddington's Stephanie Watts (374) holds the Union Co. record for made 3’s in a career. Congratulations Reagan!!

Congratulations to Porter Ridge senior Kyler Harris. Harris, the newest member of the 1000-point club. Kyler joined the 1K point club during the 66-54 loss to Rival game with Sun Valley. Harris entered the game with 989 career points and finished the game with 29 points. Kyler no has 1019 career points joins former Pirate teammate Isaiah Williams (1061 pts) as the only two Pirates in the exclusive 1K point club. Congrats Kyler!!

Yellow Jackets Blakeney set school records and enters top 5!

Jamyah is now the 5th all-time leading scorer in Union Co. history and the Forest Hills record holder for points in a career and a season! Blakeney’s 29 points in the Anson Co. win moved her past Tonjai Everett’s 1728 points for most points scored in a career at Forest Hills. Blakeney now ranks 5th all-time in Union Co. history behind Weddington’s Stephanie Watts (2566 pts), Parkwood’s Tiffany Brown (2161 pts), Cynthia Monroe (1877 pts) and Emry Tsitouris (1792 pts) Blakeney has scored 638 points this season with at least 2 games left in the season. The previous school record was held by Jennifer Hailey with 614 points in the 2007-08 season.

The Union Co. record for points in a season is held by Weddington’s Stephanie Watts with 901 points in 2014-15. Congrats Jamyah!!!

Congratulations to Marvin Ridge senior Zahra Douglas, the newest member of the 1000-point club. Zahra joined the club during the 50-43-win Cuthbertson. Ms. Douglas entered the game with 983 career points and finished the game with 18 points. Zahra, now with 1001 points joins former Maverick great Jordyn Henry (1021 pts) as the only two Mavericks in the exclusive 1K point club. Congrats Zahra!!

Congratulations to CATA’s senior guard Jake Shearin is now CATA’s all-time leading scoring 20 points in 73-64 the loss to Anson Co. Friday night. Jake needed 10 points heading into the game to pass Ryan Grigston as the all-time scorer for the Cougars. Shearing joined the 1000-point club last week and now is the best to ever play for the Cougars and currently has 1053 career points. Congrats Jake!!

Cardinals Boatright joins the Union Co. record book!

Union Academy’s outstanding sophomore forward Paisley Boatright joined the Union Co. record book earlier this week after grabbing 28 rebounds in a 63-46 win over conference rival JM Robinson. Boatright led the Cardinals with a stat line of 17 points/28 rebounds/2 assists/6 steals and 2 blocks in the win. The 28 boards for Ms. Boatright is a Union Academy school record previously held by Lauryn Boyd (’15-16) with 25. Boatright’s 28 rebounds now ranks her tied for 2nd all-time in Union Co. history with Marvin Ridge’s Jordan Henry’s 28 rebounds back in the 2011-12 season. The Union Co. record for rebounds in a game is Forest Hills Jennifer Hailey with 30 twice. Congrats Paisley!

Congratulations to CATA’s senior guard Jake Shearin, the newest member of the 1000-point club. Jake joined the 1K-club during the 63-51 loss to Monroe after scoring 26 points in the game. Jake needed 12 points heading into the game and now has 1014 career points. Jake is the third CATA boy’s player to reach 1000 point club in school history. Shearin joins former Cougars in Quay Threatt (1005) and Ryan Grigston, who holds the school record of 1043 points in a career. Congrats Jake!!

The Forest Hills senior guard is quickly moving up the all-time Union Co. career points list after scoring 46 vs. CATA, 29 vs. Piedmont, 30 on Friday vs. rival Monroe and 19 vs. N. Stanly. Jamyah Blakeney now has scored 1581 points in her career and ranks 15th all-time. Blakeney’s 46 points in the win over CATA is the 2nd highest scoring game in Union Co. history. She has scored 30+ points in a game 8 times this season including 3 40+ point games. The Forest Hills school record for points in a career is held by Tonjai Everett (2010-2014) with 1728 points, which is well within Jamyah’s reach. Good luck and Congratulations Jamyah!!

Congratulations to Parkwood senior guard Jade Washington, the newest member of the 1000-point club. Jade joined the club during the 61-41 win over West Stanly after scoring 20 points in the win. Jade needed 15 points heading into the game and joined the club on a free throw and now has 1005 career points. The Parkwood record for career points is held by Tiffany Brown (2161) who played at Parkwood from 2000-2004. Porter Ridge’s outstanding freshman point guard Miley Malcolm dished out 15 assists in a 77-73 loss to Butler earlier this season. The 15 assists tie the most assists in a game since the 2008-09 season when current Porter Ridge’s girls head coach Morgan Brown dished out 15 assists. Malcolm currently leads Union Co. in assists with 5.7 per game. Congrats Miley!!

Monroe's Gingham ties Redhawk rebounding record!

Monroe’s 6’2 junior center tied a the Redhawk school record for rebounds in a game with 25 in a 62-58 overtime win over Sun Valley. Gingham grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and scored 19 points in the game. The 25 rebounds ranks 3rd all-time in Union Co. history adn ties Gingham with former Redhawk great Zasha Barrett who grabbed 25 rebounds 10 years ago in the 2012-13 season. The Union Co. record for rebounds in a game of 30 is held by Forest Hills great Jennifer Hailey, who did it twice in her career. Congrats Saniya!!

Reagan is now the all-time Cavalier leader for 3-pointers made ina a career in school history. Reagan passed Cavailer great Taylor Helms who previously held the record with 196 career 3-pointers made. Iovino now sits 3rd all-time in Union Co. history behind Weddington's Stephanie Watts (374) and Sun Valley's Karli Mason (207). Congratulations Reagan!!

White needed just 3 points headed into the game. White finished with 26 and now has 1023 career points. The Sun Valley record for career points is held by Shaun Stewart with 1980 points. Harris broke the Porter Ridge school record formerly held by DJ Harrison who scored 40 points in a playoff loss to Ragsdale in the 2006-07 season. Harris becomes the 6th player to score 44 or more points in a game in Union Co. history. The Union Co. record for points in a game is held by Sun Valley’s Shaun Stewart (‘11- ‘12) and Weddington’s Grant Hamilton (‘22-’23) who recently tied the record last week. Congrats Kyler!

Weddington's Grant Hamilton torched Carolina International and moved into the Union Co. record book. Hamilton, a 6'2 junior guard couldn't miss on his way to to a 45 point game that included a Union Co. record 12 3's in the 92-62 win. Hamilton's 12 3-pointers sets the Union Co. record which was prevouisly held by Parkwood's Ashe Hutto who hit 11 3-pointers vs. Forest Hills in 2002-03. Hamilton's 45 points ties the Union Co. record for points in a game set by Sun Valley's Shawun Stewart vs. Marvin Ridge in the 2011-2012 seaosn. Congrats Grant!!!

Yellow Jackets Blakeney sets school record!

Jamyah Blakeney set a Forest Hills school record and joined the Union Co. record book after dropping 42 points in a 69-58 loss to Union Academy. Blakeney’s 42 points breaks the Forest Hill’s school record of 40 held by Jennifer Hailey vs. Weddington in the 2007-08 season. Blakeney’s 42 puts her 3rd all-time for points in a game behind Weddington’s Stephanie Watts who scored 50 and 44 during her outstanding career. Watts (W), Hailey (FH), Amanda Leigh (SV), Emry Tsitouris (PW) and now Blakeney are the only women’s players to score 40 or more points in a game in Union Co. history. Congrats Jamyah!!!

Mike Helms and his Wolf Pack (PW)


Parkwood's Helms reaches milestone with win!

Parkwood head coach Mike Helms won his 400th career game in a 57-50 win over Piedmont. Helms, a 1978 graduate of Parkwood High School, had previous coaching stints at Parkwood as his first job in the late 90’s, Helms returned to Parkwood as the boy’s head coach two years ago. Prior to being at Parkwood Helms was tapped to be first boys’ basketball head coach at both Porter Ridge (2005-06) and Cuthbertson (2009-10) when those schools opened their doors. Helms guided the Cavaliers to back-to-back state title game appearances in 2011-12 and 2012-13 season and left the Cavaliers with a 177-122 record. Prior to being at Porter Ridge Helms was the Weddington girls head basketball coach one game into the 2001-02 season and stayed 4 years resulting in a 154-106 record at Weddington.

On a side note, when I started UnionCountyHoops.com and broadcasting games back in 2007-08 season the one coach that supported the idea 100%, opened his office, his gym and his basketball mind was Mike Helms. Congrats Coach!

Nikki Young & Darius Copeland (UA)


Union Academy names girls & boys hoops coaches

Union Academy has named Nikki Young and Darius Copeland to take over their girls and boys varsity programs respectively. Coach Young has been at Union Academy for 6 years and has served as a coach for various teams. This includes being a head coach for Middle School Girls Basketball and Varsity Track. She has also been an assistant for Varsity Girls Basketball and Varsity Coed Cross Country. Coach Young is still serving as an assistant for Varsity Coed Cross Country and Varsity Track in the Spring.

Coach Copeland moved to Charlotte area in 2018 and started coaching at Lake Norman Charter High School. “I am excited to continue some of the tradition that has already been established in the basketball programs at Union Academy but also bring my own philosophy that will help us get to the next level. I love this game and it has given me a lot of opportunities in my life”, Coach Copeland stated in a press release. He previously served as the JV head men’s basketball coach and Varsity assistant men’s basketball coach for the past four seasons. At Lake Norman Charter.

The Cardinals open up the 2022-23 season at rival CATA on November 21st.

Reagan Iovino (CU)


Iovino picks Belmont Abbey

Cuthbertson’s senior guard Reagan Iovino has announced her commitment to continue her academic and basketball career with Belmont Abbey. Iovino, a 5’4 sniper is one of the best shooters to come out of Union Co. in the past 15 years. As a freshman Iovino was named to the UCHoops All-Newcomer team after putting up 9.9 ppg while shooting 43% from 3-point land. As a sophomore Reagan was named 3rd Team All-UCHoops and All-SCC averaging 10.9 ppg, 2.1 spg while shooting 40% from 3-point land. Reagan missed the first 16 games of her junior season after suffering a knee injury in the previous season’s playoff loss and still averaged 9.5 ppg and shot 42 % from 3-point land earning UCHoops Special Mention. Congrats Reagan and looking forward to you senior year!

Mason named Sun Valley AD

Sun Valley head boys’ basketball coach Keith Mason has added another title to his name. Mason is now the Athletic Director at Sun Valley High school. Mason shared the position with Troy King in 2021-22 school year. King left Sun Valley earlier this spring for a position outside of Union Co. Mason has been the Sun Valley boys head coach since 2007-08 and is the 2nd longest tenured boys coach in Union Co. behind Monroe’s Johnny Sowell. The Spartans return their top four scorers from last years team that finished 16-11 overall and 3rd in the SCC.

Ross Parker (SV)


Sun Valley names Parker as womens HC

Sun Valley named Ross Parker the new girls head coach for the upcoming season. Parker replaces Troy King, who stepped down as head coach earlier this spring. Parker comes from Cox Mill HS where is was the JV women’s HC and assistant varsity HC. The Spartans finished 15-12 season and a 3rd place finish in the SCC advancing to the 1st round of the state playoffs. The Spartans return their core 3 players in rising senior Lindsay Avant (11.0 ppg/35% from 3/2nd Team All-UCHoops), rising juniors Tyra Robinson (9.7 ppg/4.1 apg/3rd Team All-UCHoops) and Ari Meaders (8.4 ppg/9.4 rpg/3rd Team All-UCHoops) next season and should challenge for the SCC title. Yellow Jackets White headed to Guilford

Forest Hill’s Zarriah White has committed to continue her academic and basketball career at Guilford College. White announced her commitment via her twitter account. White, a 6’0 wing averaged 12.6 ppg, 7.9 rpg and 2.9 spg while being named 2nd Team All-UCHoops as a senior. Zarriah was named All-Rocky River and helped lead the Forest Hills Yellow Jackets to a 23-6 record and the 3rd round of the state playoffs. Congrats Zarriah!!

Pirates Anderson staying close to home

Porter Ridge’s outstanding win Jacob Anderson has signed with Belmont Abbey for hoops. Pirates head coach Garrett Malone announced the signing via his Twitter account, “Congratulations to Jacob Anderson for signing with Belmont Abby where he will continue his academic and athletic carer. We are so proud of you Jacob!” Anderson, a 6’2 guard averaged 12.1 ppg while shooting 39% from 3 for a 20-8 Pirate team. Anderson was named 2nd Team All-UCHoops and All-SCC as a senior. Weddington taps Carsner to continue the winning ways

The Warriors search for a new head coach is over. The Warriors have named assistant coach Richard Carsner as the new boy’s head basketball coach. Carsner has been a part of the Warriors staff the past two years and will take over for Gary Ellington who stepped down earlier this spring after 230 wins and 2 state titles. Prior to Weddington Carsner was the boys head coach at Ashbrook HS where he had a 68-69 record and led the Green Wave to the playoffs all 5 years at the helm. The 2022-23 Warriors should return rising seniors Evan Morton (11.4 ppg/4.6 rpg/3.4 apg/2nd Team All-UCHoops), Bernie Tah (2.6 ppg/2.7 rpg), Nolan Dunphy (2.6 ppg) along with rising junior Jack Ellyson (3.3 ppg). Weddington's Cook headed to Presbyterian

The 3rd player from the back-to-back state champion Weddington Warriors will play college basketball. senior guard AJ Cook will continue his academic and basketball career at Presbyterian College. Cook made his announcement on Twitter and instagrahm. Cook was named 2nd Team All-UCHoops, All-SCC and 2nd Team All-District as a senior after winning the State 4A Titlte. Cook put up 12.1 ppg/2.5 rpg/3.2 apg/2.1 spg and shot 40% from behind the 3pt arc. Cook was named UCHoops Player of the Week twice during the 2021-22 season. Cook set a Weddington school record by making 8 3-pointers in 67-36 win over Monroe. Congrats AJ!

Sun Valley’s Troy King has stepped down as head coach of the Lady Spartans. King took over the program prior to the 2020-21 season after a 5-21 season. Last season King & the Spartans finished 15-12 season and in 3rd place finish in the SCC advancing to the 1st round of the state playoffs. Forest Hills names Rains new girls HC

Forest Hills Marc Richardson has retired from coaching and the Yellow Jackets have named Brandon Rains the new girls head coach. Rains has the boys head coach at Union Academy from 2016-18 and Anson Co. 2012-15. Most recently he was the girls and boys middle school coach at East Union the past four years. As a varsity head coach Rains is 81-75 overall. They Yellow Jackets will be returning All-UCHoops 1st team rising senior guard Jamyah Blakeney (23.2 ppg) and rising sophomore guard Kayl Starns. Kayl was named to the UCHoops Newcomer of the Year. Congrats Coach!


Porter Ridge name Brown girls HC

Former Union Co. standout Morgan Brown has been named head coach at Porter Ridge. Brown was an assistant girl’s coach at Forest Hills for the past 3 years. Brown replaced Colin Brandon who was the interim head coach after Angelia James was dismissed just weeks before the 2021-22 season was to start. The Pirates finished 6-19 after losing two of their best players to injury prior to the season starting. The Pirates will have senior guard Jyana Salton and junior forward Megan Brandon returning from injury along with sophomore guard Sidney Blackwell (11.1 ppg) and junior forward Anna Scaldara to build around. Brown was named UCHoops Player of the Year for the 2010-11 season as a member of the Parkwood Wolf Pack and played at Limestone college. Congrats Coach!

Weddington names Welch HC

The Weddington Warriors named Dan Welch as the new head girls basketball coach. Coach Welch has an girls’ varsity assistant last season and JV women's coach and served as the interim head coach after January 2022. The Warriors made the announcement via their twitter account. Prior to Weddington Welch coached boys JV and freshman basketball at Mesa Ridge High School in Colorado Springs. The Warriors return a good core with rising senior’s Hannah Tse, Bella Sarcona and rising sophomore’s Ellie Fyans, Natalie Poole and Maddison Motto. Congrats Coach Welch!

Mavs Shivers ties school record in her final game.

In her final game as a Maverick, Marvin Ridge senior guard Kyndall Shivers tied the single season Maverick record for points in a season with 335. Kyndall the sharp shooting all-SCC guard tied the record of former Maverick great Jordan Henry. Henry set the Maverick record in the 2011-12 season and is the Mavericks all-time leader in points (1021), rebounds (957), and blocks (280). Shivers finishes her 4-year Maverick career with 786 points scored. Congratulations Kyndall!!

Jeff Buseick is named Cuthbertson girls HC

The Cavaliers have named Jeff Buseick as the new girl’s head coach. Buseick, a Weddington graduate was an assistant for the Cavaliers boys’ varsity team under Chris Caputi. Buseick was previously the girls’ basketball head coach at Ardrey Kell from 2014-2020 and was HC at Charlotte Latin for the 2020-21 season. Buseick has a record of 153-52 including 3 trips to the Elite-8 and one trip to the sweet-16. Buseick was named the PGC Transformational Coach of the Year for 2019-20 season. The Cavs will return seniors Reagan Iovino and Amanda Sacoto to build around for the 2022-23 season. Good Luck Coach Buseick!!

Joell Allen (CU)


Allen steps down at Cuthbertson

Cuthbertson’s girls head coach Joel Allen has stepped down from that position Friday. Allen took over the Cavalier program prior to the 10-11 season and turned the program into a SCC force. “I can’t be fully committed to being a dad and a high school coach at the same time right now.”, Allen stated via text. Allen leaves the program as the Cavs winningest head coach with 206 wins. As head coach at Cuthbertson the Cavs won the SCC title outright or shared it four times. Allen led the Cavs to the Sweet-16 in 2012-13 & 2017-18, the State Title game in 2018-19 and the Elite-8 in 2019-20 season. All five of Cuthbertson’s 1000-point scorers played for Allen including Cuthbertson’s all-time leader in Taylor Helms. The Cavs will have seniors Reagan Iovino and Amanda Sacoto to build around for the 2022-23 season. Good Luck Coach Allen, it’s been a real pleasure!

Chase Lowe is now Union Co.’s all-time leader in assists! Lowe passed Forest Hills standout Nas Tyson as Union Co.’s all-time leader in assists with 453. Tyson held the Union Co. record for assists in a career with 451. Lowe entered the 3rd rd playoff game vs. Cox Mill needing 4 assists. Lowe finished the game with 6 and more importantly the playoff win. The Warriors advance to the Elite-8. Congrats Chase.

Congratulations to Weddington’s senior forward Kyle Frazier. Mr. Frazier joins the 1000-point club after scoring 18 pts in the 1st round state playoff win vs. Olympic. Kyle needed 13 points entering the game and hit his 1000 point on a free throw. Cards get 2 on all YVC team

Union Academy's Paisley Boatright and Liz Saunders were named to the all Yadkin Valley Conference team. Freshman forward Paisly Boatright and junior guard Liz Saunders had very good seasons and found themselvs being named to the all conference team. Boatright, a 5'11 wing scored 10.6 ppg and grabbed 9.8 rebounds while Saunders, a 5'6 guard finished second on the team in scoring averaged 8.0 ppg and added 2.2 steals on the season. Congrats Ladies!!!!

Ruby Williams sets Cavs season record!

Cuthbertson senior forward Ruby Williams set a Cavalier record for points in a season with 540 and counting. Ruby needed 10 points to break the record heading into the SCC Tournament championship game vs. Marvin Ridge. Ruby finished the game with 22 points and more importantly the title win. Williams breaks former Cavalier great Taylor Helms who scored 527 points in the 2014-15 season. Congrats Ruby!!!!

Congratulations to Porter Ridge senior forward Isaiah Williams. Isaiah is the newest member of the 1000-point club. Williams needed 19 points entering the SCC Tournament semi-final game vs. Sun Valley. Mr. Williams finished the game with 26 points and the Pirates advance to the SCC Tournament finals. Isaiah is now Porter Ridge’s all-time leading scorer and is the FIRST Porter Ridge Pirate boys player to join the 1000-point club. Congrats Isaiah!!

Ms. Williams finished the game with A career high 35 points and the win. Ruby joins past Cavaliers greats Taylor Helms, Maddie Dillinger, Lauryn Hardiman, Lilly Anderson, and Morgan Carlson in the club. Mavericks win SCC title for 1st time in school history

Congratulations to the Marvin Ridge Mavericks for winning their 1st SCC Conference basketball Championship in school history. The Mavericks sealed the SCC Title with a 56-32 win over Weddington Wednesday. The Mavs improved to 9-0 in the SCC and will finish the conference schedule with a game at Weddington again Friday Feb 11th. The SCC conference tournament will begin on Feb 14th and Marvin Ridge has a bye in the first round and will play Tuesday Feb 15th in the semi-finals. Congrats to Coach Lenahan and good luck ladies!!

Weddington’s Chase Lowe finished the 82-53 win over Cuthbertson as Weddington's all-time leading scorer. Chase scored 26 points, breaking 2017 grad Ryan Schwieger record (1,405) and is now your all time leading scorer with a current total of 1,411. Chase not ranks 16th all-time in Union Co. history. Weddington’s Kyle Frazier will be staying close to home as he continues his academic and athletics by signing with Belmont Abbey. Belmont Abbey made the announcement via their twitter account, "We are pleased to announce, Kyle Frazier (@Frazier21Kyle), as the first signee of the Belmont Abbey Men's Basketball 2022 recruiting class. Frazier was named 2nd Team All-UCHOOPS as a junior & sophomore and ALL-SCC both seasons. Frazier helped the Warriors to the 2020-21 State Championship! Congrats Kyle!

Currently Lowe ranks 8th all-time in Union Co. history. Piedmont’s Cameron Tripp is the Union Co. record holder for rebounds in a career with 949 boards.

Cavs Beals gets HOT and ties a Union Co. record

Cuthbertson sophomore guard Caleb Beals tied the Union Co. record for 3-pointers in agma with 9 in a 82-33 in over Buford HS. Beals broke the Cuthbertson record of 7 made 3’s in a game previously held by Cody Esser (’10-11). Beals finished the game 10-of-15 from the floor and 9-of-13 from 3 for 30 points. Cavaliers head coach Chris Caputi stated, “It was a special night for a kid who has done nothing but work his tail off in practice so far this season. He competes hard and always stays ready. Combine the record-breaking performance that comes in the 2nd of back-to-back home games, with the fact that our students have been waiting to get back in the gym and watch some basketball, it made for an unbelievable atmosphere as our crowd grew louder and louder with each made three. It was fun to watch.” Beals ties the Union Co. record of 9 made 3’s held by Forest Hills Jai Rorie, who did it twice in the 2017-18 season. With the win the Cavaliers improve to 5-0 on the season. Cougar's Shearin joins 40 point club

Central Academy’s Jake Shearin joined the 40+ point club after scoring 40 points in the 91-46 win over Apprentice Academy. The win was the Cougars 1st win of the season and new head coach Marcus Winnegan. Shearin is the first player to score 40+ since Piedmont’s Hunter Tyson dropped 42 pts in 2017-18 season. Sun Valley’s Shaun Stewart holds the Union Co. record for point in a game with 45 set in the 2011-12 season. Congrats Jake!!!

Porter Ridge names Collin Brandon girls head coach.

The Porter Ridge Pirates have named Colin Brandon as their new head girls basketball coach. Brandon replaces Angelia James after James was let go in early October. Porter Ridge made the announcement via twitter, “Coach Colin Brandon moves into the role of Head Women’s Basketball Coach after serving as the Porter Ridge High Varsity Women’s Assistant since 2018.” Porter Ridge moves from the SW4A to the SCC and will return almost everyone including their 4 top scorers from last season. The Pirates open the 2021-22 season hosting West Cabarrus on Nov. 22nd. .

Drew Preuninger (UA)


Union Academy names Drew Preuninger boys head coach.

The Union Academy Cardinals have named Drew Preuninger the boy’s head basketball coach. Preuninger takes over for Barney Harris who unexpectedly passed away in April. Preuninger comes from the pacific northwest here he was the head boy's basketball coach at Hermiston High School in Hermiston, Oregon for the past two years. The 2021-22 season will be his 5th year as a head coach in boy’s basketball and 8th year coaching at the high school level. Preuninger played 4 years of college basketball at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon and holds 2 school records (most 3’s in a season and career). The Cardinals were 4-8 in a "Covid) short season and will need to replace their top two scorers from last year. They willl build around senior guard Bailey Austin (7.7 ppg/2.6 rpg/1.0 spg). The 2021-22 season tips off for Union Academy on November 22nd hosting Queens Grant.

Porter Ridge makes a head coaching change.

After 2 season as the girls head coach at Porter Ridge Angelia James has been relieved of her duties. James made the announcement via her Twitter account, "I appreciate the opportunity at Porter Ridge for the last 2 years. Just received the phone call I’m no longer the head coach, I’m very disappointed in the decision that was made but I trust God. Based off a moment that I had, we all have them mine was recorded that’s all." The "moment" that that Coach James is refering to happened on Sept. 9th when Monroe police responded to the hotel for a disturbing the peace call. James said God told her there was a felon who needed to be arrested in the hotel. James was 11-23 in the two years at the helm for the Pirates. The 2021-22 high school basketball season tips off November 22nd.

Cavs Williams picks Cornell!

Cuthbertson Cavaliers outstanding forward Ruby Williams has committed to Cornell University to further both her academic and basketball careers. Williams made the announcement via her twitter account simply stating "dream come true #gobigred @cornellwbball". Williams, a 6'0 ft wing can play and guard 4-of-the-5 positions on the basketball court if needed. Williams is heading into her senior year after being named All-UCHOOPS 1st team and All-SCC after putting up 13.0 ppg/3.7 rpg/2.1 apg/2.2 spg/1.0 bpg for Coach Allen and the Cavs as a junior. As a sophomore Ruby was named All-UCHOOPS Special Mention (6.8ppg/2.7 rpg/2.3 apg/1.3 spg). Ruby was named to the All-New Comer Team as a freshman (5.2 ppg/2.8 rpg/1.0 spg). Cavliers Head Coach Joel Allen said, "I've coached future NFL athletes, future doctors and lawyers, I've been doing this for 20 years and I've never coached a kid that has the type of moral character, work ethic, and commitment to her teammates that Ruby has. A kid with her qualities comes along once in every 20 years. I'm just thankful that I had the opportunity be there for 4 years of her journey." Congrats Ruby!
